LAWMAKERS CALL TO END ACCEPTANCE FEES IN HIGHER INSTITUTIONS

The House of Representatives has called for the abolishment of ‘acceptance fees’ usually collected by various institutions in Nigeria from fresh students who just gained admission.

Lawmakers deliberated on putting an end to this trend, in a motion raised by Emeka Chinedu, PDP-Imo (Ahiazu Mbaise/Ezinihitte Federal Constituency.

Chinedu who said the payment of acceptance fees as requirement for admission is one of the factors affecting students access into tertiary institutions. He noted that “it should bother the lawmakers that his state’s Imo State University charges N70,000 as acceptance fee.”

Having established that institutions such as “University of Ibadan charge 35,000; University of Lagos, 20,000; Ahmadu Bello University, 30,000; Lagos State University, N20,000; University of Uyo, 25,000,”

He concluded that the acceptance fees will hinder the progress of some students, hence the need to put an end to the outrageous fees paid by students. He was unanimously backed by his colleagues.
