The National Bureau of Statistics on Friday reported that the unemployment rate in Nigeria has risen to 27.1 percent in the second quarter of the year.
The last statistics published by the bureau was in 2018 when the unemployment rate was at 23.1 percent as of the third quarter of that year.
The 2018 statistics showed that Nigeria’s unemployment rate rose from 18.8 per cent in the third quarter of 2017 to 23.1 per cent in the third quarter of 2018.
The statistics bureau said the economically active or working age population (15 – 64 years of age) increased from 111.1 million in Q3 2017 to 115.5million in Q3 2018.
The downward spiral of the economy is expected to further impact negatively on employment rate as companies are trying to survive by cutting funds and dismissing workers.
