The National Broadcasting Commission has sanctioned Channels Television, Arise Television and Africa Independent Television over claims of  “unprofessional coverage” of the #EndSARS reportage.

The disclosure was made by the acting Director-General of the NBC , Prof. Armstrong Idachaba, at a briefing in Abuja on Monday.

Media stations were cautioned earlier in the week by the NBC against #ENDSARS reportage in manners that would lead to unrest or violence in the polity or society.

In response to the sanctions , the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project disapproved of the financial sanctions of 3 million each issued by the NBC on Channels TV, Arise TV and AIT over the broadcasts of the #ENDSARS protests.

SERAP issued a statement through its deputy director ,Kolawole Oluwadare, headlined  ‘SERAP asks NBC to withdraw ‘illegal fines on Channels TV, AIT, Arise TV or face legal action’.

“This action by NBC is yet another example of Nigerian authorities’ push to silence independent media and voices. NBC should drop the fines and uphold Nigerian constitution and international obligations to respect and protect freedom of expression and media freedom. We will sue NBC if the unconstitutional fines are not rescinded within 48 hours.”
