George Floyd: Derek Chauvin Bags 22 and half years in prison

Derek Chauvin has bagged 22 and half years in prison for the murder of George Floyd.

Justice Peter Cahil on Friday, sentenced Chauvin to serve 270 months in prison out of which 199 days have been spent.


‘This is based on your abuse of your position of trust and authority and also the particular cruelty was shown to George Floyd,’ the Judge said to the disgraced former cop’.


Chauvin was charged for second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter – for kneeling on 46-year-old Floyd’s neck for nine minutes in May 2020.

Chauvin who was found guilty offered his condolences to the Floyd family after speaking to them briefly.

Chauvin said he could not give a full statement because of additional legal matters, but said, ‘There’s going to be some other information in the future that would be of interest. And I hope things will give you some peace of mind. Thank you.”


Chauvin still has two pending federal indictments, one for George Floyd and one for assaulting a 14-year-old with a flashlight.


Chauvin spoke after four heartbreaking victim impact statements from George Floyd’s family, including Floyd’s seven-year-old daughter Gianna Floyd, his nephew Brandon Williams, and brothers Terrence Floyd and Philonise Floyd.

Floyd’s seven-year-old daughter Gianna gave a heartbreaking victim impact statement. ‘I ask about him all the time,’ Gianna Floyd said via video. ‘I was asking how did my dad get hurt. I want to play with him.’


Chauvin was captured on video kneeling on the neck of the 46-year-old Floyd, suspected of using a counterfeit bill, for more than nine minutes. He ignored the victim’s plea for air until he passed out and died on May 25, 2020.

‘I miss him and I love him,’ she said.

Three other members of Floyd’s family, including his nephew Brandon Williams and brothers Terrence Floyd and Philonise Floyd, gave poignant victim impact statements in the courtroom Friday.

‘Immediately my life changed forever,’ Philonise said while wiping away tears. ‘For an entire year, I had to relive George being murdered.’
