Multitude of students from the University of Benin have stormed the campus gate and its vicinity to protest the 4- month old strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities.
The protesters have christened the movement ‘UNISTREET’ meaning that Nigerian students would now be taking lectures on the streets with some of them posing as lecturers, all in a bid to display their discontent with the ongoing crisis.
Students from University of Ibadan also staged a protest on Tuesday to demand the resumption of academics, while efforts to protest by University of Lagos undergraduates were thwarted by heavy armed security forces who manned the campus gate.
Students have been out of the Universities for four months following the demands of ASUU officials which are yet to be met by the Federal Government.
ASUU had accused the government of poor commitment to the payment of earned academic allowance; the continued use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System and refusal to adopt the Universities Transparency and Accountability Solution, among others.
