A high court in Akure, Ondo state has sentenced three persons to death for the murder of Funke Olakunrin, daughter of a leader of Afenifere, prominent Yoruba socio-political group, Reuben Fasoranti.

Frank Mba, force public relations officer, had earlier announced that four suspects were arrested over the killing of Olakunrin, namely Mohammed Usman, Mazaje Lawal, Adamu Adamu and Auwalu Abubakar.
These four were arraigned on an eight count charge bordering on conspiracy, kidnapping, murder, armed robbery, unlawful possession of firearms and aiding and abetting.
The Judge, Williams Olamide in delivering judgement convicted three out of the four suspects, Usman, Lawal and Adamu and the three were sentenced to death.
The judge held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
The fourth suspect, Abubakar who had been made to face trial for aiding and abetting the crime, eventually got discharged and acquitted by the court after the trying of his case.
The deceased Olakunrin, aged 58, was heading for Lagos from Akure, Ondo state capital, when her vehicle was targeted in July 2019. In an attempt to escape, the attackers fired at her, and she died while being taken to hospital.
